Medicines for Ukraine

The war in Ukraine is weighing heavily on millions of people. In many places there is a continuing lack of medicines and medical equipment for emergency care, but also for regular health care. Together with the initiative Tübingen helps Ukraine, DIFÄM continues to send medicines and medical material to Ukraine.

Shipping medicines to where they are needed

In addition to acute emergency care, there is also a need for medicines to treat chronically ill people. Using lists of requirements from Ukraine, the DIFÄM team compiles medicines and medical equipment for emergency care and regular medical care. As a state-recognised central procurement agency for medicines, DIFÄM orders the goods from manufacturers and wholesalers. The Ukrainian network handles the transport and distributes the materials locally to the respective health facilities and supply centres. "Thanks to the contacts of our Ukrainian network, we are able to react specifically to requests and needs and send medicines and equipment to where they are needed," explains DIFÄM Director Dr Gisela Schneider.

In addition to special medicines for a paediatric clinic and materials for a laboratory, equipment for an oncology centre was also shipped, for example. "Due to the shortfalls in the energy and water supply, we expect that hospitals and health centres will also break down," says Christine Häfele-Abah, Head of Pharmaceutical Projects and Procurement at DIFÄM. "Therefore, we are also supporting the Ukrainian network in other necessities so that they can help systematically."

Emergency aid through delivery of medicines for Ukraine

Since Russia's first attacks on Ukraine in February 2022, we have received calls for help from trauma surgeons, paediatric clinics and hospitals. DIFÄM was able to send relief supplies with medicines such as painkillers and antibiotics, dressing and infusion materials, disinfectants as well as medical equipment such as oxygen concentrators and ultrasound equipment. The supplies went to Kiyv and from there also to the zones of conflict in eastern Ukraine.

Special thanks to our donors

We are grateful for the support and helpfulness of donors, communities, businesses and schools. For example, schools in the area organised fundraising runs, other pupils distributed flower pots with blue and yellow flowers in exchange for a donation. General practitioners in Tübingen collected money in their surgeries. All these donations are a special sign of solidarity with the people in Ukraine.
