Climate-resilient reconstruction after cyclone

Two years ago, the people of Malawi experienced a violent tropical cyclone with flooding and landslides. The consequences of the cyclone are still visible today. To enable people to finally return to a normal life, DIFÄM is supporting the sustainable and climate-resilient reconstruction of the villages.

The small East African country of Malawi is one of the five countries in the world most affected by extreme weather events caused by climate change: Droughts, floods and cyclones. In 2023, the people experienced the worst cholera outbreak and at the same time a violent tropical cyclone with flooding and landslides. Entire villages were washed away and hundreds of thousands of people were left homeless. Together with the Evangelical Lutheran Development Service in Malawi, DIFÄM provided rapid medical and humanitarian emergency aid in the devastated communities on the Lunzu River and a camp for homeless people.

However, the consequences of the cyclone are still visible today: massive poverty, broken infrastructure and a lack of medical care. Together with our local partner, we want to sustainably rebuild the affected villages and adapt them to the changed climate conditions. Together with the local people, we want to build or restore solid houses, toilets, water reservoirs and wells for clean water, train people in hygiene and combat hunger by creating new income opportunities.

So that people can finally return to a normal life.
