Together against HIV in South Africa

South Africa is the country with the highest number of people living with HIV in the world. Tsibogang, a DIFÄM partner organisation, is committed to HIV prevention and provides HIV patients with life-saving medication. These drugs were previously financed by international funds. Now the USA have frozen all their aid. The supply of medicines is no longer guaranteed. DIFÄM is supporting its partner organisation so that people can still be supplied.

HIV/AIDS is a major problem in South Africa, affecting almost one in five adults. But in recent years, the South African Ministry of Health and external international donors, such as USAID, have established good care structures. Tsibogang works in areas where there are still shortfalls in care. The organisation provides home care for 205 people with HIV and their access to the necessary antiretroviral therapy. The care workers build up a trusting relationship with the families and provide counselling and support for the sick people and their relatives. Tsibogang also trains young people to educate their peers about HIV and AIDS at schools and in youth groups. This work is not only important, but urgently needed to protect the lives of thousands of people.

Resistant viruses - a danger for everyone

Thanks to improved medical care, the mortality rate from AIDS in South Africa has been significantly reduced. However, this important work is now in jeopardy. Many people in South Africa live in extreme poverty and are dependent on the free distribution of medicines. However, one of the largest donors in development cooperation, the USA, have now frozen all aid. This seriously jeopardises medical care for people with HIV in South Africa. Many of those affected need continuous HIV treatment, but this can no longer be guaranteed without the necessary support. The interruption of therapy can, however, lead to early resistance to the medication. This puts not only the patients themselves but also all other people at risk, as resistant viruses can also be transmitted directly.

Saving lives with medication

As DIFÄM, we work to ensure that local people are not left to fend for themselves. We support our partner organisation in South Africa in procuring the urgently needed HIV medication so that treatment can continue and lives can be saved. Please help us with your donation. Every contribution helps to provide the medicines that are so urgently needed. Together we can ensure that the people affected continue to receive the life-saving treatment they need.
