One of the poorest countries in the world
The Republic of Chad is a landlocked country in central Africa. It is divided into a desert zone in the north, an arid sahelian belt in the centre and a more fertile savannah zone in the south. N’Djamena is the capital and the largest city. Chad is home to over 200 different ethnic and linguistic groups. Arabic and French are the official languages.
On the list of the Human Development Index, Chad places 184 out of 187, showing that it is one of the poorest countries in the world. The population of Chad is more than 12 Million people, over 80% of them rely on subsistence farming and raising livestock for a livelihood. Since 2003 crude oil has been the country’s primary source of export earnings, superseding the traditional cotton industry.
The under five mortality rate per 1.000 live births is 150. The maternal mortality ratio is 1100 per 100.000 live births, one of the highest in the world.
